CPT codes 60660 and 60661 are available for thyroid nodule radiofrequency ablation. We recommend verifying coverage and payment details with your billing department or insurance payor. Our dedicated reimbursement support team is also available to help streamline the billing process and address any questions you may have.
For RFA, a generator is needed to produce an electric circuit. Internally cooled electrodes (also called probes), 18 or 19 gauge, with various active tip lengths, are connected to the generator and used. STARmed’s RF Electrodes are specifically designed for thyroid RFA and have been cleared for use on soft tissue ablation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Because of the location of the thyroid gland being close to the surface of the neck, the short shaft length (7 cm) of these electrodes is easy to handle during the procedure. Our best seller, star RF Electrode size 18G, 7cm, 7mm, is the most clinically-proven RF electrode used in thyroid applications. Depending on the size of the thyroid nodule or recurrent cancer, the appropriate length of the active tip can be selected to improve the efficacy of ablation and reduce thermal injury of surrounding structures.
Before thyroid RFA, the patient lies in a supine position (face up) with the neck mildly extended. Two grounding pads are attached to both thighs.
The procedure itself takes less than 30-60 minutes depending on the number or volume of the nodule(s). Additional time, 60-120 minutes, is needed for preprocedural care and postprocedural monitoring.
The patient will stay in the recovery area for at least one hour after the procedure, with monitoring of vital signs (every 30 minutes). A physical examination of the thyroid/neck will be done after an hour using ultrasound. Then, the patient will be discharged with any needed prescription or medication.
Intended Use
The VIVA combo RF System is intended for use in percutaneous and intraoperative coagulation and ablation of tissue.
Star/VIVA RF Electrode is intended for use in percutaneous and intraoperative coagulation and ablation of tissue.
The ELRA Electrode is a radiofrequency (RF) catheter which provides bipolar energy to perform partial or complete ablation of tissue in the pancreatic and biliary tracts.
