For RFA, a generator is needed to produce an electric circuit. Internally cooled electrodes (also called probes) are connected to the generator. Electrodes are 18 or 19 gauge, with various active tip lengths.
STARmed’s RF Electrodes are specifically designed for thyroid RFA. They have been cleared for use on soft tissue ablation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Because of the location of the thyroid gland, the short shaft length (7 cm) of these electrodes is easy to handle during the procedure. Our best seller, star RF Electrode is the most clinically-proven RF electrode used in thyroid applications. It is size 18G, 7cm, 7mm.
Depending on the size of the thyroid nodule or recurrent cancer, clinicians select the most appropriate active tip length. This may improve the efficacy of ablation and reduce thermal injury of surrounding structures.
Before thyroid RFA, the patient lies in a supine position (face up) with the neck mildly extended. Two grounding pads are attached to both thighs.
The procedure itself takes less than 30-60 minutes depending on the number or volume of the nodule(s). Additional time, 60-120 minutes, is needed for preprocedural care and postprocedural monitoring.
The patient will stay in the recovery area for at least one hour after the procedure. They can expect monitoring of vital signs (every 30 minutes). A physical examination of the thyroid/neck will be done after an hour using ultrasound. Then, the patient will be discharged with any needed prescription or medication.
